“Thank you again, from our special education students at George W. F. McMechen High School. Our students loved the shows. One of the students, a young woman of 19 years of age with severe disabilities as a result of cerebral palsy, said that watching Helen Keller was so inspiring for her, that she had new hope for her future. Watching the show made her realize that “if Helen Keller can make it in the world than I can too!! I just need to believe in myself as Annie, Helen’s teacher, believed in her and then she believed in herself.” Your organization did a holy deed by enabling these inner city students to attend.”

“We saw 'Roots of Rap' today at Goucher College in Towson, MD. I found it riveting and emotionally moving, funny, engaging, creative, and educational too! It was so much fun to introduce my children to the very best of black poetry (Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, Paul Lawrence Dubar, etc.)

The acting was superb. I loved the way the actors had an ongoing dialogue with the audience—it made the performance that much more engaging for the kids.

I was astounded by the phenomenal performance of Nikki Giovanni’s “Ego Tripping.” Wow. I can’t begin to describe the impact that had on us.

And we all loved so much the performance of Langston Hughes “Weary Blues.” My older daughter, who has just started playing blues on the piano, was rocking and swaying to that one. We reread the poem when we got home and talked about it. I hope she will compose a piece using some of the verses.

And “The Negro Speaks of Rivers.” So deep. And Robert Hayden’s 2 poems. Completely riveting. And the rap music and dancing threaded it all together so that we could see where the music comes from.

Thank you so much to the writers, directors, producers, and thank you to the highly talented actors.”
Betsy Garrett, Homeschooler
